Many people throughout the Kansas City area are familiar with the story of 2004 SM East graduate Bret Miller, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 24. In a few weeks, hundreds of thousands of people across the country will have heard his story as well.
Miller is one of two male breast cancer survivors who will be featured on a March 3 episode of Katie Couric’s nationally syndicated talk show. The other? “Shaft” star Richard Roundtree. The two taped a segment about men who face the disease most commonly associated with women in late January in New York along with a prominent oncologist.
For years, Bret Miller was told not to worry about the hard nugget the size of a lima bean underneath his right nipple. He first mentioned it to a doctor in 2003 during a physical to play football at Shawnee Mission East when he was 17. “They were like, ‘You’re 17. It’s puberty,’” he recalled in the living room of his parents’ Prairie Village home. “‘It seems like a calcium buildup. You’re in puberty. It will dissipate. They come and go.’
